After trying out a few different carbon fibre paddles from various suppliers, I settled on Werner and ordered a 125cm bent shaft Cyprus two piece paddle in November of 2020. This review covers in detail what I do and don’t like about the Werner Cyprus kayak paddle.

Over my time as a paddler, I’ve gradually been accumulating gear and honing my skills. One piece of advice I received when I first got into paddling was to “purchase the best paddle that you can afford.” Being a flatwater paddler who’s committed to longer paddling trips, deciding on a paddle from a wide variety of options was challenging.

I was super excited to have this paddle arrive early in the 2021 season so I could get out on some water and paddle with this beauty. Sadly, supply chain challenges due to Covid had me waiting until late in July of 2021 before I finally got it in my hands for a first paddle.

Here is my additional piece of advice for folks thinking about purchasing a new sweet paddle, “Order as early as you can this fall and pray!”

I made this video after my first day with the Werner Cyprus paddle. My review continues after.

Werner Cyprus Flatwater Kayak Paddle Specs

The Werner Cyprus is a full carbon fibre kayak paddle and comes in a bent or straight shaft design with regular or small diameter shaft sizing.

The bent shaft two piece paddle is super light and weighs in at 25.5 oz (719g) and ranges in length from 205 – 230 cm. I purchased the 215cm based on my boat width and height.

The paddle angle can be feathered with ease using the Smart-View Adjustable ferrule system that Werner incorporates.

This paddle has a mid size blade measuring 46cm long by 18cm wide (610cm2). The edge of the blades has an abrasion and impact resistant material called Dynel to protect the paddle from wear, particularly in some of the rougher paddling locations.

So what does this all mean to me as a paddler? Let’s talk about performance and feel.

Werner Cyprus Paddle Performance and Feel

To start with, the Werner Cyprus is a high performance premium paddle with a mid-size blade designed for a high angle paddling style. I found that between the blade size and the bent shaft, it was easy on my wrists, elbows and shoulders.

The Werner Cyprus paddle is ideal for paddlers who intend to paddle longer trips and will be putting on some solid km's on the water.

It is a super buoyant paddle that enters the water smoothly and has very little flutter during the stroke. On my first few times out using this paddle, any flutter that I noticed during a paddle stroke was more about paddle technique and once I made adjustments to my hand position and angle it disappeared. At the end of the stroke, as many other reviewers have said, the paddle almost pops out of the water due to the combination of the carbon fiber blade and foam core design.

The back face of the paddle is smooth and contributes to the clean entry and exit from the water enhancing the exquisite feel as the blade moves through the water. I’ve found the 15 degree feathered offset is the best setting for my paddling style. It is easy to see the offset your paddle is set at with Werner’s Smart-View Adjustable ferrule system. The two piece paddle connects easily and this ferrule system is low profile with a button that locks the paddle solidly into place making it feel like a solid one piece paddle.

I hunted around for some suggestions for maintaining a problem-free locking ferrule. It’s helpful to rinse the two ends of the shaft and the ferrule with fresh clean water to wash out any fine particles or debris after each paddling trip. Additionally, spraying some 303 Areospace Protectant onto the button periodically will help keep the ferrule from sticking.

The Werner Cyprus is a sweet paddle and while it has a higher price tag, it’s well worth its weight in carbon fibre. This is a paddle that will get you places, be easy on the joints, and is an investment that will keep you moving on the water for years to come.

Finally, I posted a video about my first trip on the water with my new Werner Cyprus and Werner took the time to reply and comment on the post.
