So you’re thinking of getting a raft for an overnighter, or maybe a multi-day trip. There’s plenty of options out there, so how do you pick the right raft?

In this article we’ll go over some key points to keep in mind for choosing rafts for multi-days on medium and high volume rivers.

Multi-Day Raft Trips

For this article we’re focusing on choosing a raft for whitewater multi-days. This means sizing a raft up for something like a Babine trip, which is a Class III / IV medium volume river. And you’ll probably still want to be able to use the same raft on a day trip like the Kicking Horse, which is Class III / IV.

Medium to High Volume Rivers

For medium to higher volume trips like the ones listed above, a 14’ raft would give you enough packability for a four, five, or six day trip. But this size raft would also be maneuverable enough for fun and sporty day trips on whitewater.

A 14’ raft is really the most versatile size. The NRS Otter 140 is their best selling raft. You can do practically anything in that boat. It is fairly wide at 7’.

NRS does make the STAR Outlaw 142, which is 6” narrower. That's nice for anglers because it's easier maneuver down bony rivers or lower water.
