SUP Skills: How to Improve Your Forward Stroke
episode 3 | watch episode 4 here
Hey everyone, Kimberly Kenyon here! As an AQ ambassador, certified instructor, and dedicated standup paddleboarder, I'm excited to welcome you back to another episode of our Basic and Intermediate SUP Skills Series. In this episode, we’ll unlock the secrets to a more powerful and efficient forward stroke.
Breaking Down the Forward Stroke
Let's break it down into three essential steps: reach and stack, the catch, and the power stroke.
Reach and Stack
The first step in perfecting your forward stroke is to reach and stack your hands. Position the shaft so it’s straight up and down, perpendicular to the water. This alignment gives you a more direct and efficient stroke.
The Catch
Next, let’s talk about the catch. As you prepare to begin your power stroke, make sure to plant the blade fully into the water. This ensures you’re engaging the water effectively and setting up for a powerful stroke.
The Power Stroke
For the power stroke, pull the blade back towards your feet. It’s important to note that with paddleboarding, you should stop the stroke at your feet. Continuing beyond this point will only push water up and reduce efficiency. A common mistake is creating a splash; aim for a clean entry and exit to maximize effectiveness.
