Hi! I’m Andy, the manager of AQ Outdoors Edmonton. I’m an avid kayak fisher myself and this is everything you need for kayak fishing if you’re looking to get into the sport.

Kayak Fishing Safety Gear

Let’s start with kayak fishing safety gear. First and foremost, everybody needs a PFD.

The NRS Raku is a highly recommended, fishing-specific PFD. It has all the accessory pockets needed to organize your flies, lures, and other fishing necessities you want to keep within reach.

The NRS Raku is a full-back PFD, which helps keep it locked in place when you're leaning against it, and it's also dual certified in both Canada and the US. For more information, check out the NRS Raku review.

Another awesome piece of kayak fishing safety gear is the NRS Co-pilot. It easily attaches to the majority of PFDs. Ideally, I hope the only use you ever have for it is spreading peanut butter at the campsite, but it's good to have on you to be safe.

Another one of my favorite pieces of safety gear is a kayak fishing flag. If you've ever been on the lake that's busy with lots of wakeboard boats or wake skate boats, being seen is vitally important. This flag is gonna attach to the back of your boat and let other anglers know you're there so they can avoid you and you can avoid them.

Fishing Gear

Other things that are gonna be super handy on the water is some gear for fishing! The YakAttack Omega Pro Rod holder easily releases and is just as easily adjusted on the fly. It’ll work for all your fishing rods. It's great for trolling, great for taking a break, and great for setting your rod in. For more info, check out the YakAttack Omega Pro review.

One of my favorite pieces of gear that I never leave shore without is a drybag. You're gonna stick your phone in there, your lunch, and anything else you love and want to keep dry.

Another great piece of gear are scupper plugs. Not all boats need them, and not everybody does need them, but what these do is seal off your scuppers to prevent any water from coming up.

This is super handy on those really chilly mornings or cold fall evenings when you're getting out fishing and you may not want to get damp like you do in the middle of July.

Other piece of fishing gear I like is an anchor trolley. What these do is attach to the front of your boat and they'll run from the front all the way down, one side to the back. This gives you adjustability to turn your boat wherever you want – anchor facing waves, facing the wind, facing away from the wind, etc. It just helps you be a little more precise when you're anchoring, trying to catch the walleye of your dreams.

Kayak Fishing Gear Organization

Another category of fishing gear is organization, which includes a crate. Most kayak fishers run some type of crate system. A crate is a great storage option for all your tackle, sweatshirts, extra gear, things like that.

Typically, they have a couple rod holders on them, open and close. I love the YakAttack crate. It's super adjustable, you can put the rod holders wherever you want, you can put the clasp wherever you want. It's super fine tuneable for you and your boat and your fishing style.

In the crate, I have a couple things that are super handy on the water as well.

One key piece of gear, besides your PFD, is a hat. It's gonna protect you from the UV rays, keep the sun outta your eyes, and make your days on the water a little more enjoyable.

On that same note, keeping your sunglasses accessible and preventing them from sinking to the bottom of the lake, not that I know from experience, is the sunglasses strap.

It goes around the back of your head and keeps your sunglasses handy right where you want them, so they'll be there when you need them.

Kayak Fishing Paddle and Net

Another thing every kayak fisher’s gonna want on the water is a paddle. You want to get one that's the appropriate length for you, your boat, and your paddling style.

For wider sit-on-top style fishing kayaks, a paddle that adjusts from 240cm to 255cm is gonna work for 95% of the kayak fishers out there.

Getting a quality paddle with a quality boat is gonna make your day on the water a lot more enjoyable.

Next up is the YakAttack Leverage Landing Net. If you ever landed a fish on a kayak, controlling it with one arm is tough. The leverage landing net puts the bend in the shaft and keeps it centred on your arm so you can fight the fish with one arm and land it with the other. Really conducive for kayak fishing. One of my favourite things to have on the water.
