First Thoughts: Astral Indus Whitewater Rescue PFD

Video: Tom Stewart

We’re excited to share our initial thoughts on Astral’s latest rescue PFD—Indus, which we've been eagerly awaiting it since its initial renderings nearly two years ago. After a bit of a wait, we finally have it in hand and I’ve just tried it on for the first time. Here are my fresh thoughts on this new piece of gear.

Bigger Volume, Better Fit

One of the standout features of this PFD is its increased volume—33% more than Astral's renowned Greenjacket. It’s specifically designed for those challenging big water environments and paddlers pushing the limits in Class V rapids, where floating a little higher could be crucial if things go awry. With all that added foam, you'd expect a bulky fit, but surprisingly, it feels quite the opposite.

My initial thoughts are positive: the fit is surprisingly snug without feeling cumbersome. It sits lower on the chest, which enhances comfort, and it doesn’t seem as bulky as you might anticipate from a PFD with this much added foam.

Comparing to the GreenJacket

When comparing this new model to the Greenjacket, the similarities are notable. Both have a similar build with a separated upper and lower section, allowing for excellent freedom of movement. This design ensures that the upper section can move independently of the foam concentrated around the waist.

Pocket Design

One notable difference is the pocket design. Although this PFD has a sizable pocket, it does sacrifice some ease of access and specific organization features found in the Greenjacket. However, this trade-off helps reduce overall bulk. Inside the pocket, you'll find a handy rescue guide with basic SRT skills and knot-tying tips, which is a nice touch.

Features and Adjustability

The PFD includes the classic button release for a carabiner pigtail and an additional side stash pocket for quick access. They've even added helpful instructions on the release button, clearly indicating that you need to twist the carabiner for release.

On the front, there’s a net lash point for a knife and an internal stash pocket, while the back pockets are reminiscent of those loved on the Greenjacket. Overall, the features align with what you'd expect from an Astral rescue PFD—well-built and reliable. The PFD is webbed all the way through, ensuring durability when pulling the straps.

Adjustability is done through the front, and although the shoulder straps aren’t adjustable, the fit remains super comfortable. It’s a fully featured, well-built rescue PFD that delivers on both functionality and comfort.

Style, Sizing, and Value

In terms of aesthetics, this PFD comes in three colors—black, red, and blue—and is available in three sizes, S/M, M/L, L/XL. At a price point of $500, it’s a significant investment, but given its build quality and comfort, it’s a worthwhile one.

Final Thoughts

While this isn’t an in-depth on-water review, it’s clear that this PFD is a strong contender in the rescue gear category. We’ll aim to get more detailed feedback from our staff who have been using it.
