NRS Neso Helmet Review: The Next Evolution in Whitewater Safety

Introduction

Hey, Tom from AQ Outdoors here! Today we're checking out some exciting new gear. Joining us is Peter, our Western Canada sales rep, who has graciously donned the all-new NRS Neso helmet for 2025.

The Neso is the latest helmet offering from NRS, stepping in as the replacement for the old Havoc helmet—a solid, budget-friendly entry-level option. But make no mistake: the Neso isn’t just a simple successor. NRS has seriously stepped up their game with better comfort, new features, multiple sizing options, and a fresh array of colorways.

First Impressions: Comfort and Fit

So, Peter, what do you think of the Neso on first wear?

"Super comfortable fit, great hold, and rock solid on the head."

I have to agree. I tried it on earlier, and the retention system—operated by a simple dial—is really easy to adjust and locks beautifully into place. While it's not the most padded helmet in the world (so don’t expect luxury plushness), it offers solid comfort and security. And at the $110 entry-level price point, it's a fantastic option.

One of the biggest improvements? Sizing. The extra small to small size makes it a game-changer for kids. We’ve struggled to find a good, affordable whitewater helmet for younger paddlers, but the Neso fills that gap perfectly.

The Game-Changer: Magnetic Buckle

Now, here’s where things get interesting. The Neso comes with a cool magnetic buckle. The first time I tried it, I, uh… got stuck. I couldn’t figure out how to release it. (Pro tip: practice a couple of times before heading out on the water.)

Once you get the hang of it, though, it's a slick system that securely locks the helmet in place—without the traditional clamping buckle. This is especially great for kids, who sometimes struggle with (or outright fear) the classic buckle pinch.

"Yeah, nothing worse than a pinched chin!"

We hear you, Peter. And we agree.

Final Thoughts

That’s the rundown on the new NRS Neso helmet. With multiple colorways, improved comfort, and thoughtful features like the magnetic buckle, we’re really excited to see how this helmet performs in 2025.

Big thanks to Peter for trying it on for us! If you want to check it out for yourself, visit us at AQ Outdoors in Calgary or Edmonton, or find it online at aqoutdoors.com.
