I'm Gord McColl, a whitewater kayaker and an ambassador for AQ Outdoors. I've been rocking the Ripper 1 for three seasons and, as of summer 2023, I'm switching things up to the Ripper 2.

In this review, I'll give you the lowdown on the Pyranha Ripper 2 large and how it stacks up against its predecessor, the Ripper 1 large. We’ll explore the key differences between the two models (as well as the pros and cons) to help you make the most informed choice when considering this best-selling half slice kayak.

Ergonomics and Comfort

One of the first noticeable differences between the Ripper 1 and the Ripper 2 lies in ergonomics. As soon as I sat in the Ripper 2, the elevated knee position felt remarkably comfortable, addressing an issue I faced with the Ripper 1 large, where my knees would rub up against the sidewall.

Although both boats have a slightly low backbend, I was able to make some quick and easy adjustments myself to modify this issue (see the above video for more information on this).

When it comes to the bow rocker of the new model, it’s hard not to notice the massive increase in bow volume and rocker. When sitting in the Ripper 2 large, I almost felt like it was a Pyranha Scorch, so I decided to get my large Scorch out and put them side by side. The bows are actually almost identical. So, you can expect to have throw boofs that feel like you’re paddling a creek boat, coupled with the playful elements of a slice.

Edging and On-Water Maneuverability

The difference in edge response between the Ripper 1 large and Ripper 2 large is quite substantial. The edges on Pryanha’s newest Ripper respond in a way that feels more graceful than the Ripper 1.

With the newest model, I immediately noticed enhanced stability, both primary and secondary. The edges are very responsive and make moving this boat around the water effortless. In contrast, the Ripper 1’s edges engage immediately, creating a slightly twitchy feel. While this is quite exciting, it can make it tricky to paddle. The edges tend to lock in on you, making last-minute adjustments to your angle near impossible.

In contrast, the Ripper 2 large's edges felt more graceful and responsive, allowing for effortless directional changes without being overly locked in. What’s more, the improvements in the Ripper 2 large's tail design offer easier initiation and control for maneuvers like the stern squirt, along with smoother and more controllable rotations.

Surfing and Versatility

Both boats surf really well but are completely different in style. The Ripper 1 large is definitely the speedier of the pair and has a more instant response from the hull. Carving with the Ripper 1 large was a gradual process, while the Ripper 2, though not as fast, excelled in edge responsiveness and a more versatile approach to wave surfing.

The Ripper 2 large's ability to change direction effortlessly and perform flat spins sets it apart from its predecessor, which preferred straighter lines on a wave.

Performance on Various Waters

In terms of versatility, the Ripper 2 large outshines the Ripper 1 large. While I primarily stuck to class III river running with the Ripper 1, the Ripper 2 large proved comfortable and efficient on big water, as well as low volume creeks, drops, ledges, and holes. The improved stability and forgiving nature of the Ripper 2 large opened up more possibilities for different types of whitewater paddling. However, it is worth noting that the Ripper 1 large had the upper hand in eddy attainments due to its faster hull speed.

Which is Better?

Both the Pyranha Ripper 1 large and Ripper 2 large have their distinct appeal. The Ripper 1 large holds a special place in my heart, having taught me valuable lessons as a paddler. It demands precise handling and it rewarded skillful navigation.

On the other hand, the Ripper 2 large is quickly becoming my favorite kayak. Its improved design and versatility make it an ideal choice for almost any whitewater scenario. While it may not be as fast as the Ripper 1 large, its stable and nimble creaking abilities, along with its exceptional performance in surfing and river running, make it a strong contender as a quiver killer for big water.
