Hey there, Simon here from AQ Outdoors. I'm excited to share my initial thoughts on the brand-new Aerial Whitewater Paddle Series from Aqua Bound. Having had the privilege of some involvement in the design process, I want to offer you an unbiased review based on my first experience with the final production model.

Design and Options

The Aqua Bound Aerial Paddle Series caters to diverse preferences with two blade sizes—Major and Minor—available in carbon and glass materials. Additionally, Aqua Bound Aerial provides flexibility in shaft options, offering bent, straight, one-piece, and adjustable configurations. In this review, we're focusing on the full carbon bent shaft with the adjustable ferrule option, the first final production model we've received.

Versatility and Quiver-Killing Potential

One standout positive feature is the Aerial's quiver-killing potential. The adjustable ferrule allows users to customize the feather and length of the blade, eliminating the need for separate playboating and river running paddles. This versatility, coupled with the option to disassemble the paddle for easy travel, makes it a one-paddle-does-all solution.

Construction and Materials

While we don't usually delve into intricate details, the Aqua Bound Aerial Paddle Series introduces a notable feature—lamb lock stitching. This Kevlar stitching reinforces the blade, preventing wear and chipping common in non-foam core paddles. It's like a shield against the shrinkage of the blade over time, a smart move by Aqua Bound.

Performance in the Water

Despite not being the lightest carbon paddle on the market, the Aerial Paddle impresses with its balanced swing weight. During our initial use, we observed minimal feathering on paddle strokes from tip to hip, providing a smooth and enjoyable experience. The paddle's thin blade design contributes to an easy pull through the water.

Grip and Comfort

The paddle's rubberized feel adds a unique touch. Dry, it's remarkably grippy, almost to a fault. However, once wet, the grip remains without causing discomfort or blisters. This feature eliminates the need for additional grip aids like paddle wax or hockey tape.

Adjustable Ferrule and Indexing

The adjustable ferrule is a standout feature, adjusting up to five centimeters and accommodating angles from 60 degrees left to 60 degrees right. Concerns about the impact on durability are addressed, making it suitable for various paddling styles. The triangular indexing, though initially unusual, provides a comfortable and natural grip after some use.

Considerations

While the Aerial Paddle Series presents numerous positives, it's not without considerations. The adjustable ferrule's black-on-black components can be challenging to see, especially when wet, potentially posing an issue for those with visual challenges. Additionally, the pricing may be a deterrent for some, as these paddles rank among the more expensive options in the market.

Durability and Weight

Being a new addition to Aqua Bound's lineup, the long-term durability of the Aerial Paddle Series remains unproven. The robust build of the blades, featuring a spline for added strength, suggests positive outcomes, but time will tell. As for weight, the paddle may not be the lightest in its category, yet the balance and smoothness compensate for any perceived heaviness.

Conclusion

In full transparency, our review is based on limited use, and while it's aggregated feedback from experienced paddlers, further testing is necessary for a comprehensive assessment. Aqua Bound appears to have excelled in crafting a versatile and well-built paddle with the Aerial Whitewater Paddle Series. If you're willing to invest in a high-quality, adaptable paddle, this might be the solution you've been looking for.
