NRS Blayzr Packraft – High-Performance Self-Bailing Whitewater Packraft

From local Class IV laps to hike-in wilderness missions, the NRS Blayzr Packraft is built for paddlers who want noticeably more whitewater performance without giving up the simplicity and confidence of a self-bailing packraft.

The Blayzr sits in a very interesting place in the whitewater packraft world. Compared with the NRS Neutron, it adds a more defined hull shape, better edging, stronger secondary stability, and a more connected paddling position. Compared with the Alpacka Mage, it remains a little more forgiving and straightforward, especially for paddlers who prefer a self-bailing setup instead of a spraydeck cockpit.

In AQ Outdoors terms: the Neutron is the sporty all-round whitewater packraft, the Mage is the most kayak-like, and the Blayzr lands right between them.

Built for Intermediate & Advanced Whitewater

The Blayzr is designed around paddlers who already understand river movement and want a boat that rewards more active technique.

Its near-parallel side tubes, Tri-Plane Hull, extended rocker, high-volume bow, and Vertex Ultra outfitting all work together to create a packraft that can be driven, edged, boofed, and placed more precisely than a traditional round-hulled packraft.

Tri-Plane Hull – The Big Performance Upgrade

The Blayzr’s defining feature is its displacement-style Tri-Plane Hull.

Near-parallel side tubes and a more structured hull shape improve speed and tracking while creating significantly better secondary stability and edging control.

That means the Blayzr is happier being actively leaned onto edge during ferries, eddy turns, carving moves, and technical river manoeuvres rather than simply sitting flat on top of the water.

More Edge Control Than the Neutron

AQ Outdoors’ testing of the Neutron found it quick to pivot, sporty, and highly maneuverable, especially in Class III+ whitewater. It is a fun boat, but its more conventional packraft hull tends to move with the water rather than carve aggressively through it.

The Blayzr takes a noticeable step toward a kayak-like feel. The Tri-Plane Hull and more connected outfitting allow the paddler to hold an edge more intentionally and drive across current with more precision.

Still More Forgiving Than the Alpacka Mage

The Alpacka Mage remains the more aggressive whitewater platform. AQ Outdoors has found the Mage much closer to a lightweight creek boat, with excellent carve, surf performance, edge control, and active paddling response.

The Blayzr closes much of that gap while keeping a self-bailing open cockpit, making it simpler in splashy water and a little less demanding for paddlers who don't need a full spraydeck-style whitewater setup.

Extended Rocker & High-Volume Bow

The Blayzr uses extended rocker and a high-volume bow to help it climb over waves and punch through hydraulics.

The bow is designed to stay higher through turbulent water, reducing the amount of water entering the cockpit and helping the boat maintain momentum through steeper features.

Self-Bailing Floor

The Blayzr remains self-bailing, continuously draining water from the cockpit as you paddle.

For paddlers running splashy Class III and IV rivers, that keeps the boat lighter and more manoeuvrable instead of carrying a cockpit full of water after every wave train.

Vertex Ultra Three-Point Thigh Straps

Lightweight Vertex Ultra Three Point Thigh Straps give the paddler a much more connected feel to the boat.

The three-point system wraps securely around the thighs, allowing you to lift, edge, brace, and control the hull far more effectively than with a simple open-seat packraft setup.

Vertex Ultra Backband with Integrated Throw Rope System

The removable Vertex Ultra Three Point Backband provides adjustable lumbar support and integrates with the included Vertex Throw Rope.

When you leave the boat to scout, portage, or set safety, the system can be worn as a throw-rope waistbelt, keeping rescue equipment with you rather than back in the boat.

Squared Interior Bow – More Kayak-Like Foot Position

The squared interior bow is designed to mimic the feel of a kayak bulkhead.

That gives the paddler a more positive place to brace the feet and ankles, improving connection through the legs and allowing stronger paddle strokes and more controlled boat movement.

There is also usable space behind the seat for additional storage or an optional dry bag.

Full-Length I-Beam Seat

A full-length I-beam seat adds stiffness through the hull while reducing drag and keeping the paddling position efficient.

The seat remains lightweight and is designed to be less susceptible to overinflation than a conventional inflatable cushion.

TIZIP® Waterproof Internal Storage

A TIZIP® stern closure gives access to fully waterproof internal storage inside the tubes.

Two welded internal lash tabs let you secure gear and control weight distribution for overnight or expedition trips.

The TIZIP also speeds up deflation, which is very welcome at the end of a long carry-out.

PVC-Free TPU-Coated Construction

The Blayzr uses highly durable PVC-free nylon with dual-sided TPU laminate.

The tubes use lightweight 135D material, while the floor steps up dramatically to 1680D dual-TPU-coated nylon for serious abrasion resistance where the boat takes the most abuse.

RF-Welded & Internally Taped Seams

Overlapping RF-welded seams create the primary structural bond, with interior taping adding another layer of reinforcement and air retention.

This is the same construction philosophy AQ Outdoors has consistently liked about the NRS packraft range: clean, durable, repairable, and designed around real-world backcountry use.

Vertex-Compatible Rigging

Six nylon D-rings are positioned for bow and stern grab lines, while additional lash tabs and custom aluminum hardware integrate directly with the NRS Vertex Outfitting System.

That gives the Blayzr a clean, purpose-built whitewater layout without needing improvised attachment points.

Three Graded Sizes – 115, 125 & 135

Unlike many packrafts that simply stretch the same shape between sizes, the Blayzr uses graded sizing. Length, width, tube diameter, interior width, weight, and load capacity all change to better suit different paddlers.

AQ Outdoors Fit Tip: Start with your height and weight, but don't automatically size up just for extra room. A tighter cockpit generally gives better whitewater control, while a larger size provides more comfort and additional space for gear. For technical paddling, proper thigh-strap and foot position matter more than simply having the biggest boat possible.

NRS Blayzr vs NRS Neutron

The Neutron is already a very capable whitewater packraft. AQ Outdoors has found it quick to pivot, highly maneuverable, and confidence-inspiring in Class III+ water, especially with its Vertex outfitting.

The Blayzr takes the next step in hull performance. Its Tri-Plane Hull, near-parallel side tubes, more defined foot position, and stronger edge control make it more precise when carving into eddies, holding ferries, or driving through technical lines.

Choose the Neutron if you want a fun, versatile, forgiving whitewater packraft that is easy to move around and capable in serious river environments.

Choose the Blayzr if you are looking for a boat to grow with or already have solid whitewater skills and want better speed, edging, secondary stability, and hull control.

NRS Blayzr vs Alpacka Mage

The Mage is the more kayak-like of the two. AQ Outdoors' testing has found that it surfs, glides, carves, boofs, and holds an edge in a way that feels much closer to a modern creek boat than a traditional packraft. It still maintains better secondary stability than any packraft we have tested.

The Blayzr closes that performance gap considerably, especially with its Tri-Plane Hull, squared bow, thigh straps, and more structured paddling position.

Where the Blayzr differs is its self-bailing simplicity. You don't need to manage a spraydeck cockpit, and the open design remains forgiving when repeatedly filling with water in splashy whitewater.

Choose the Mage if maximum whitewater precision, carving, rolling, and kayak-like performance are the priority.

Choose the Blayzr if you want much of that active whitewater feel but prefer the simplicity, drainage, and accessibility of a self-bailing packraft, or need a slightly more forgiving package you can grow your whitewater skill with.

AQ Outdoors' simple version: the Neutron is playful and forgiving, the Blayzr adds genuine edge and hull performance, and the Mage takes the concept closest to a lightweight creek kayak.

Why We Like the Blayzr Concept at AQ Outdoors

The whitewater packraft category has been moving steadily toward better outfitting, better hull definition, and more kayak-like control. The Blayzr feels like NRS taking a major step in that direction.

The Neutron already proved that NRS could build a durable, fun and highly capable whitewater packraft. The Blayzr adds a much more intentional hull underneath the paddler.

That means you aren't just relying on rocker and thigh straps to point the boat where you want it. You can start using the hull itself by edging it, driving it, carving it, and taking advantage of secondary stability in ways that are much closer to conventional whitewater technique.

At the same time, NRS hasn't gone all the way to a spraydeck-style kayak replacement. The self-bailing floor keeps the Blayzr simple, approachable, and very practical for remote river missions.

Who Should Choose the NRS Blayzr?

The Blayzr is best suited to paddlers who already have some whitewater fundamentals and want more performance from a packraft.

  • Whitewater kayakers moving into packrafting
  • Class III–IV river paddlers
  • Remote creek and wilderness missions
  • Paddlers who actively use edging and secondary stability
  • Boofing, surfing, ferries, and technical eddy work
  • Multi-day whitewater trips
  • Paddlers who want more performance than the Neutron

If the Neutron has started feeling a little too willing to go wherever the river tells it and you're ready to start telling the boat where to go instead, the Blayzr is the logical next step.

Important Inflation & Hot-Weather Care

Air pressure inside the Blayzr increases as temperatures rise. Long exposure to direct sun and high temperatures can cause overinflation, potentially damaging seams or other components.

When the packraft or seat is sitting out of the water in hot conditions, NRS recommends bleeding off pressure or fully deflating the boat and seat as needed.
