What’s New: PFAS-Free ePE Fabric

Let’s dig into the biggest change for 2026—the move to the ePE membrane.

In simple terms, GORE-TEX has ditched the harmful, long-lasting PFAS chemicals (often referred to as “forever chemicals”) that were historically used in waterproof membranes. These substances have raised environmental and health concerns over the years, so this shift is a big deal.

The new ePE (expanded polyethylene) membrane delivers the same core performance—waterproof, windproof, and breathable—but with a reduced environmental footprint. It’s paired with a 100% recycled nylon face fabric and a dope-dyed backer, which reduces water usage, pollution, and energy consumption during manufacturing.

From a user perspective, you’re not giving anything up. You’re still getting that trusted GORE-TEX Pro performance. From an environmental standpoint, it’s a clear step forward.

A Quick Note on Gear Care

With any technical dry suit—especially one built with advanced materials like ePE, gear care becomes even more important.

Keeping your suit clean, maintaining the DWR finish, and regularly servicing zippers (especially the TIZIP® entry and relief zippers) will go a long way in preserving waterproofness and extending the lifespan of the garment. A well-maintained dry suit isn’t just more reliable—it’s a better long-term investment.

First Impressions on Fit & Feel

I’ve just put the suit on for the first time, and right away it feels great. The fabric is very similar to last year’s Axiom—maybe a touch more supple—but overall, it’s reassuringly familiar.

The fit is where I notice a real improvement. I used to be right on the edge of a medium, but now at 5'10" and 160 pounds, this feels like a perfect medium. It’s comfortable, natural, and moves well without excess bulk.

Subtle Updates That Go a Long Way

NRS has made a few quiet refinements that really improve the overall experience.

They’ve switched to TIZIP® waterproof zippers, replacing the previous YKK setup. The neoprene overcuffs are softer and more comfortable against the skin, and the latex gaskets are noticeably thicker. That added thickness means a bit more break-in time (so you may need to trim or stretch them), but they should hold up better over the long term.

There are also small but smart details, like mesh drainage points under the cuffs and neck to prevent water from pooling between layers, and improved gasket construction that makes repairs easier down the line.

Final Thoughts

Initial impressions of the 2026 NRS Axiom dry suit are very strong. It keeps everything we’ve liked about this suit over the years, while making meaningful updates in sustainability, durability, and comfort.

We’re looking forward to getting it out on the water and putting it through a full season of testing, but early signs point to another solid evolution of a tried-and-true favourite.
